Week 12 - Human SecurityHuman security, particularly of those under immediate threat, is a primary responsibility for first world countries who have the ability (both economically and militarily) to protect the needs of individuals who require assistance in a a variety of ways. Ranging from physical protection, to protection from the environment, from poverty, from famine, from political attack etc. the role that human security plays in upholding human values and basic rights is enormous. In countries like war torn Afghanistan these values have faced significant oppression and journalist Muhammad Rehan Rasheed makes a poignant commentary on the role the US has in maintaining its presence in the form of human security for micro-communities in Afghanistan that face numerous types of threats; economically, politically, and physically. He concludes his paper calling for the continued assistance from the US and in that a "stable, peaceful, developed, sovereign and prosperous Afghanistan is in the interest of all the regional countries.". Thus, successful efforts for human security can result in enormous benefits for neighbouring countries and for the individuals who live within the communities that inhabit these countries.
